February 19 - Jonathan repairs his trusty Liber.

 
February 20 - We attend a wind ensemble performance at the college.

"Johnny! That's my Johnny!"  I always feel like those gushing ladies at the end of The Music Man when I see Jonathan, the pianist and organist, with a tuba.

 

February 21 - Beethoven and Ancient Greece found together on the piano. Lydia likes to study history while she practices.

Another odd combination - snow on our Christmas tree now residing on the deck. Still so pretty.

February 22 - Kateri's chocolate eyes still do me in, especially when they're reading.

February 23 - A colorful, cheerful student in a new hat.

February 24 - Josiah receiving his birthday gift from his brother.

February 25 - In Eliza's own words, "Josiah - he's a good brudder."

February 12 - If you give an artistic birder girl a new little pair of sharp scissors, she's going to cut a bunch of teeny tiny birds out of paper...(the largest one is about an inch long) 

  

February 13 - If you give an engineer/physicist a family heirloom anniversary clock, chances are he's going to learn how to get it running. He will read about anniversary clocks and examine his specimen and analyze what exactly is wrong with it, and then he will order a new spring for it as the old one is all stretched out. When he puts in the new spring and finds the clock still does not run properly, he will measure the spring to be sure it is the correct size. When he determines the spring is only .0021" in diameter and not the .0028" he ordered, he will inform the vendor of his measurements (like (71/43)^(2/3) * 0.0021" = 0.0029") and how he cannot get the clock adjusted properly because they sent the wrong size. When he gets the new spring, he will install it and then proceed to record data, daily comparing the time to an atomic clock, and finally tweaking the clock until it is running precisely. This will give deep satisfaction to both him and his wife (whose grandparents originally owned the clock), far more so than any milk and cookies or even muffins and blackberry jam.

 

February 15 - Two arms full of sleepy girls at morning Mass.

 

February 16 - Father Brown dropped in for a visit and did some sketching, though he kept his brown papered parcel quite close to his person.

February 17 - We celebrated Sydney's new owlet.

(Sydney is a lovely barn owl.)
 

February 18 - Blue skies and puffy clouds - perfect swinging weather!

February 5 - We had an assembly line as my big girls helped me make booklets of traditional morning and evening prayers  for those readers who requested them. We did enjoy playing with all the pretty paper.

 

February 6 - I made colorful omelettes for Sunday brunch after Mass.

February 7 - Lydia has some cozy company while she practices.

February 8 - Lesson day! The harp teacher always takes a cup of tea, and for added fun the girls always affix a quote concerning tea to the handle of her cup.

February 9 - Eliza loves to practice with the scissors.

February 10 - Kateri concentrates as she rolls up the orange rolls for tea time.

February 11 - In honor of spotting the first robin, Lydia paints one in miniature.

A little late here still for week 5. And I apparently can't even count to seven, as I put eight pictures in my last post. :-)

 January 30 - Forlong is starting to grow new tail feathers

 

January 31 - The Dark Robber in my kitchen (Jonathan and the girls were doing a bit of humorous filming).

February 1 - Oh! Deer!

February 2 - Josiah got some Important Mail

February 3 - Lydia painted a red-bellied woodpecker for the shop

February 4 - the little bit of snow was covered with just enough ice to make for great sledding

January 22 - A jolly Murphy mopping dude on Saturday duty.

 

January 23 - A happy little laundry-folding girl.

January 24 - The little girls share a colorful meal.

January 25 - No words really; we just knew this one had to be the picture of the day.

January 26 - This one gets an explanation. I was reading the Silmarillion out loud and we had gotten to the ending part about the Rings of Power, so Jonathan started telling us about Siegfried and the ring cycle. Then we talked some more about the music and the jotuns and Brunnhilde and all that, and then of course we thought of dear Rush (Melendy). Jonathan went and got the book (one of our most favoritest kids' books of all time) and read chapter three to us, using his best Willy-under-the bathroom-basin voice. "I ain't no authority on German opry," Willy said. "The language don't appeal to me. What's this Seegfreed about?"  "Well, it's about a guy in a forest who lives in a cave with another guy who's a gnome." "A what?" said Willy. "A gnome. Kind of a dwarf like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Kind of a little magic guy. You know." "Okay. Skip it," said Willy. "So what happens? Or wait a minute, Rush. You might just take a look around and see if there's any cookies first."...

 

January 27 - Kateri draws a king and a princess and a little princess in their castle.

January 28 - Having a jolly time making pretzels together.

January 29 - This one's for M & M. A Carolina wren makes a visit to the suet but gets chased away by a hairy woodpecker. We don't usually see wrens in winter, so this was a delightful sighting.

This week I had too much trouble trying to pick just one photo a day, so I chose two. I figure I can break my own self-imposed 'rule'.

January 8 - shoveling dude deals with the few inches of white stuff.

 

January 9 - Forlong, the song sparrow without a tail, stops by for a visit.

January 10 - Eliza admonishes Faustina to 'hold the pencil right'.

January 11 - the poinsettias in church are still so lovely.

January 12 - after (almost) twenty-five years, it's (still) nice to know. This is actually one of his favorite spots to leave love notes. :-)

January 13 - Eliza reads from a vintage Cathedral reader. She was so delighted to find a story about a party for Blessed Mother's birthday.
 

January 14 - Lucy and Susan look gravely at Aslan on the stone table. They had the poor Lion bound with belts, ribbons, socks, hair elastics and every sort of strap they could find. Eventually the mice came to help out.

I've decided to join Barbara in her 52 Weeks project:  " 52 weeks of daily life in pictures: trials and celebrations, the extraordinary and mundane -- whatever is unique to the week. Join me if you like." I aim to post one single picture taken each day of the week. Seven pictures a week, fifty-two weeks. Wouldn't it be lovely to print out into a book at the end of the year, with just a glimpse at every single day of a whole year of this blessed family life together? I'm starting a little late, but I'll just post my first week.

January 1 - a New Year, page one of our new family book.

 

January 2 - Kateri loves her new wool hood from her brother

January 3 -sunrise over the city, one of Josiah's miniatures

January 4 - this was not staged! Michael happened to by lying on the floor next to the open Nutcracker (illustrated by Maurice Sendak). I cracked up when I look down at this sight

January 5 - the girls pore over a letter from their friends, two lovely girls that they swap bird ATC's with every month

January 6 - on this day when we celebrate the bringing of gifts to the newborn King, Kateri was working on being thankful for her own Christmas gifts

January 7 - Eliza receives the daily lunchtime call from her dear Dad
